5-10-09 fishing report by Captain Van Hubbard

Fishing has been very good and tarpon just got hot!

We have enjoyed very good fishing and catching recently. I have stayed busy and have a steering challenge down the boat for the weekend until I can get a part Monday AM. Not a big deal but steering is necessary! We are catching plenty of both king and large Spanish Mackerel outside on live minnows anchored up using frozen chum. They are running from under sized kings up to twenty pounds and macks up to five pounds. The big is steady flurries with multiple hook ups and a break between flurries for rest and recuperation; and to re rig gear.

Snook are available but not bunched up before this big moon. I expect to see more this week. There were some big fish available if you were patient. Reds and trout are around and both open thru Summer. We have stayed outside to enjoy better action mostly.

We did find a few permit on the reefs last week and enjoyed some quality action with them on light spinning gear. We caught several on Doc’s Goofy Jigs. These ranged from three to six pounds and great eating. Bigger ones are here but not as sweet to eat. We are using shrimp and long fluorocarbon leaders to entice the smaller ones to bite.

I did get to finally see the Florida Sportsman shows we shot last Fall out of Stump Pass Marina catching kingfish and cobia on circle hooks. The show looked great and several folks stopped me at the marina to say they enjoyed it too.
Tarpon just dropped in big time and they will be our focus frequently now. It is challenging but they are so big and strong I live to see them jump and add smiles to client’s faces! We do have some open days so get in touch and Let’s Go Fishin’ Soon! Captain Van Hubbard <www.captvan.com>
